As soon as a new show releases in India through an OTT platform, it garners a lot of attention through people talking about on social media. This includes a lot of memes, theories for the upcoming season and sometimes even controversies.

Here are some of the web series that ended up creating a controversy in the nation.

1. Indian Matchmaking

Although this reality show turned out to be very binge-worthy in the eyes of many people. Some highly criticized it for being misogynistic. It followed the life of a matchmaker Sima Taparia and her interactions with her clients as she tried to look for an ideal husband/wife for them.

2. A Suitable Boy

The show came under the limelight for ‘hurting religious sentiments’ of the people. This was due to a scene in the show where a Hindu woman and a Muslim man are seen sharing a kiss at a temple. Many people claimed that the show allegedly promotes ‘love jihad’.

3. Paatal Lok

It was one of the most popular shows of 2020 and ended up getting a lot of awards as well. However, it sparked controversy when BJP’s MLA Nandkishor Gurjar filed a complaint about using his photograph without his permission and accused the show of being ‘anti-national’.

4. Abhay 2

Zee 5’s show Abhay starring Kunal Kemmu was a crime drama about a cop and the cases he solves. There was an outrage at the release of the show by many people when they said that a picture of freedom fighter Khudiram Bose has been misused on a scene featuring a criminal board.

5. Tandav

One of the first web series of 2021 ran into trouble when many viewers noticed that in a scene some Hindu gods are being depicted in an inappropriate manner. Many political leaders also demanded a ban on the series. Luckily, after a discussion with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the objectionable scenes have now been edited out from the show.
