On this day of love known as Valentine’s Day, watching romantic films can be a perfect plan to celebrate this occasion. Although Bollywood has given us many iconic films about love which always end on a dreamy and happy note, there also have been films which have redefined love in a realistic sense.

1. Lootera
Starring Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha the film was loosely based on the short story by O Henry called ‘The Last Leaf’. It follows the life of an innocent woman who falls in love with someone without realising that he is a con man.

This bittersweet film tells the tale of two estranged lovers who come in contact with one another during a random rainy day. As they catch up, many things unfold that leads to profound and wholesome moments. This movie is also based on the short film titled ‘The Gift of the Magi’ and stars Ajay Devgn and Aishwarya Rai in lead roles.
3. Manmarziyaan
This was director Anurag Kashyap‘s very first romantic film. Unlike most love stories which are bright and beautiful Manmarziyaan showed all sides of love, The good the bad and the ugly. Vicky Kaushal, Taapsee Pannu and Abhishek Bachchan have also given some strong performances through this film.
4. Fire
One of the very few films from Indian cinema that depicted a same-sex love story. It followed the life of two women who are in love with each other and their struggle to live with it in a society which is conservative and full of taboos. Along with great acting the screenplay of the movie is also very genuine and goes hand-in-hand with the direction.
5. Sadma
The film contained legendary actress Sridevi’s finest performance Sadma is a tender love story about a woman who behaves in a childlike manner as a result of an accident that leads to amnesia. The film also stars Kamal Haasan who plays the role of a teacher who comes to her rescue and nurses her back to health. Sadma is about the bond both of them share.
