Rajkumar Hirani

Rajkumar Hirani nowadays, is busy in post production process of his upcoming film ‘Sanju’ based on the life of actor Sanjay Dutt has said that, there are still unsaid or undiscussed issues that I haven’t been able to show in ‘PK’.

Rajkumar Hirani was speaking with media at press announcement for ‘#FilmsForChange’ initiative organized by Good Pitch India and Indian Documentary Foundation along with Nandita Das, Naseeruddin Shah, Rahul Dholakia and Javed Jaffery on Wednesday in Mumbai.

Rajkumar Hirani’s last released film ‘PK’ (2017) featuring Aamir Khan did phenomenal business at the box –office which commented on god and religious traditions in India and now he has admitted he hasn’t been able to show entire account of that scenario in ‘PK’ , talking about it he said, “In a fictional format, it is expected that, you have to sugarcoat your story, entertain the audience and still manage to say what you want to say so, at some stage, I do want to make a documentary. There are still unsaid or undiscussed issues that I haven’t been able to show in ‘PK’ so, I want to do a documentary where you can bang on straight face, say what you want to say but in a film like ‘Sanju’, I think it’s more engaging as a fictional film where you see another actor doing it. If you would simply pick up a mic (microphone) and say ok there is a man who did drugs, who had a gun and did other things then, it’s boring. I feel biopics are more interesting when you see it in a fictional format otherwise, it gets boring. Subjects where you want say something else like as I said, if I want to talk about god then, I will probably go for a documentary and not a biopic”

Rajkumar Hirani is making a film based on actor Sanjay Dutt’s life and BBC has earlier made a documentary on Sanjay Dutt titled ‘To Hell and Back’ (1996) so when asked Hirani whether he ever thought of making documentary on Sanjay Dutt’s life instead of fictionalized format, he said, “Certain subject will be more engaging if they are done in a fiction format and certain subjects would be probably say more in a documentary format. ‘PK’ was the only film, which I started with reverse where I wanted to talk about god and religion but in the journey of making that film, I realized that I am ending up talking very little about it. There is so much to talk about god and religion that you cannot actually say enough in fictional format.”

‘Sanju’ is forthcoming biographical drama film, written and directed by Rajkumar Hirani and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. The film is based on the life of actor Sanjay Dutt, with Ranbir Kapoor portraying the role of Sanjay Dutt. The film is set to be released on June 29, 2018.
