Exceptional veteran multi-talented personality Hema Malini is celebrating her b’ day today. Not only is she a phenomenal actress but also a renowned writer, director, producer, dancer and a politician. She has had a career spanning more than 5 decades.

1. She was one of the highest-paid actresses

During the 70’s Hema Malini was regarded as one of the highest-paid actresses of that era. She remained to be in one of the top-most position even from 1976-1985 along with Zeenat Aman. Her film ‘Sapno Ka Saudagar’ marked her Bollywood debut in 1968. The film underperformed. It was her portrayal in films like Tum Haseen Main Jawaan and Johnny Mera Naam that garnered her immense popularity and praise.

2. Only actress to work with 4 members of the Kapoor Family

Hema Malini has starred in over 150 films. However, she is the only actress to work with 4 of the most prominent members of the Kapoor family. She shared screens with Raj Kapoor in Sapno ka Saudagar, Shammi Kapoor in Andaaz, Shashi Kapoor in Trishul, Randhir Kapoor in Hath Ki Safai and Rishi Kapoor in Ek Chaadar Maili Si.

3. Bearer of significant awards and titles

She has been given the lifetime achievement award by Zee Cine Awards (2003), Bollywood Movie Awards (2003) and the Filmfare Awards (1999). She was also felicitated by the honorary doctorate from the Sir Padampat Singhania University, Udaipur. She also got awarded the Padma Shri in the year 2000.

4. Associated with major social causes

The actress has been an avid supporter of PETA India, an animal rights organisation. She also penned down a letter to the Mumbai Municipal Commissioner to ban the use of Horse Carriages in Mumbai streets. She has also written to Union Minister for Environment and Forests to abolish the age-old tradition of Jallikattu i.e. bullfighting.

5. Political Career

Hema Malini became the campaigner for BJP in the year 1999 for Vinod Khanna, also a former actor from Bollywood. It was in 2004 that the actress officially joined BJP. She also served as an upper house (Rajya Sabha) MP from 2003-2009. She was made the general secretary in the year 2011 for BJP. She got elected to Lok Sabha after the 2014 elections.
