Known to be the villain on the silver screen but a messiah in real life, there is no doubt that Bollywood actor Sonu Sood helped change thousands of life amidst this lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic. He has been felicitated by the UNDP i.e. United Nations Development Programme’s esteemed SDG Special Humanitarian Action Award for all his commendable contributions.
It all began when the star began providing transport facilities to help the stranded migrant workers reach their respective hometown and village. One thing led to another and he soon did various other noble acts like offering his Mumbai hotel to healthcare workers and arranging safe shelters for the needy.
Apart from Sonu Sood, many other prestigious celebrities were honoured by the Humanitarian award including Cate Blanchett, Nicole Kidman, Priyanka Chopra, Antonio Banderas, Emma Watson, Angelina Jolie, Liam Neeson, David Beckham and Lionardo DiCaprio.
The official statement from the UNDP regarding this felicitation said, “The ‘Special Humanitarian Action Award’ given to Mr Sonu Sood was conferred on him by the Department of Planning of the Government of Punjab, with the support of the Sustainable Development Goals Coordination Centre. The awardees were selected based on the recommendation of an independent jury. UNDP was not involved in the selection nor in the conferring of the award to Mr Sonu Sood. We congratulate Mr Sood on receiving this award and appreciate his humanitarian efforts to help people in these challenging times.”
