Mumbai: Bauddhayan Mukherji’s directorial next, The Violin Player had its International Premiere at the 37th Durban International Film Festival where it won the top award of Best Feature Film.

Starring Adil Hussain and Bengali actor Ritwick Chakraborty, The Violin Player was the only Indian feature in the competition at the recently concluded festival.

The jury described the film as “a seductive and mysterious tale of a violin player’s mundane life, and an interesting take on how chance encounters are almost predestined.”

The Violin Player is the story of one day in the life of a Bollywood session violinist who finds expression in an unlikely place. The day unfolds to reveal startling truths about music, art, life and survival.

The film marks the Hindi film debut of the Bengali actor Ritwick Chakraborty.

After having its World Premiere at MAMI as part of India Gold, the film also opened the International Film Festival of Thrissur, earlier this year. It was also the only Hindi film in the International Competition at the IFFK, Kerala. The film is selected in competition in the upcoming Stuttgart Indian Film Festival.

The film produced by Monalisa Mukherji under the banner of Little Lamb Films, has been picked up by Alpha Violet, one of France’s leading sales agents which marked their first ever Indian acquisition.

When asked about the journey of the film, director Bauddhayan Mukherji who made his directorial debut with the award winning Bengali feature, Teenkahon exclaims, “The journey of The Violin Player is just beginning. As far as Durban in concerned, for us filmmakers, a festival like this is like the Olympics where one gets to represent ones country. Hence a win here makes it sweeter… as you end up winning laurels not for the film… not for yourself… but for India.”
