Anurag Kashyap, Mukkabaaz

With a huge buzz surrounding his directorial venture, Mukkabaaz, releasing this Friday (12th January) Anurag Kashyap is geared up to bring a fresh story and promising newcomers to the big screen.

Produced by Aanand L Rai’s Colour Yellow Productions and featuring Vineet Kumar Singh, Jimmy Shergill, Ravi Kishan and debutante Zoya Hussain, Mukkabaaz is the story of an aspiring boxer Shravan (Vinit) who slogs day and night to achieve his dream of being a recognised boxer. Things go awry when he falls in love with a high caste, mute girl who happens to be the niece of his arch nemesis, the head of the state boxing federation, Bhagwandas Mishra (Jimmy).

Renowned critics have dubbed Mukkabaaz as ‘Desi Rocky Balboa’, and ‘riveting boxing film’ and ‘much more than just another sports film’. Here are some of the reviews.

Times of India: 4 stars
Mukkabaaz is a total knockout. The not-just-a-boxing film must not be missed as it puts forth a message that’s most relevant in today’s world — Bahut Hua Samman Tumhari Aisi Taisi — #Timesup, bullies.

Mumbai Mirror: 3 stars
Vineet Kumar Singh delivers his blows and one-liners with equal precision and is committed to his role. But Zoya Hussain is clearly the best find here and her ability to internalise the mind and body of a mute individual seems more natural than deliberate. Jimmy Shergill infuses a steely intimidation in his Bhagwan Das Mishra.

NDTV: 4 stars
Mukkabaaz packs a massive punch. Watch it because it is one of the more important films to have come out of the Mumbai movie industry in recent times.

Spotboye: 4 stars
Anurag Kashyap is back in the game with Mukkabaaz. It surely is an unconventional sports film based on the backdrop of boxing. But more than sports, it’s the love story that offers a barbed critique of India’s much-abused caste system, religious intolerance and political corruption that permeates the Indian society.

Quint: 4 stars
Mukkabaaz is an Anurag Kashyap film, which means for the fastidious connoisseurs of his brand of cinema, it’s time to rejoice. This gripping drama packs a solid punch.

Bollywood Life: 3 stars
Vineet Kumar Singh and Jimmy Sheirgill deliver fine performances, as Anurag Kashyap jabs at the caste system in a fine film

Koimoi: 3.5 stars
The vernacular approach to a universal story, every punch by Vineet Kumar Singh reminding us how he literally has spent every last drop of his blood, sweat, and tears & Anurag Kashyap returning back to his home ground.

Presented by Eros International & Aanand L Rai and produced by Colour yellow in association with Phantom Films, Mukkabaaz directed by Anurag Kashyap stars Vineet Kumar Singh, Zoya Hussain, Jimmy Shergill and Ravi Kishan.
